The Race is on!

Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield and Shorade are a stone’s throw from completing the Porsche 944 Restoration Challenge celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Porsche Turbo.

Never judge a book by his cover is an apt phrase for this year’s restoration.  From the initial inspection it was difficult to tell the full extent of restoration that was required to bring it back to its former glory.

A summary of the work carried out includes removing the engine, running gear and suspension which were stripped and rebuilt following inspection and required refurbishment was carried out replacing parts where needed.  The body shell has been stripped back to bare metal.  All items have been inspected, refurbished, repaired or replaced where necessary.  The interior trim has also received the same attention.  The body shell has needed extensive restoration as corrosion was present throughout the 944, particularly across the front cross member, sills, wings, wheel arches, rear side panels and corrective work has been completed where previous repairs at the rear of the 944 had been carried out.

Wheel refurbishments have also been carried out and once the running gear and body shell marriage has been completed; wheels will be fitted and a full alignment carried out.  The road test will be done, checking of all diagnostics and electrics and the 944 will then receive a Swissvax treatment.  As Shorade are an official Porsche recommended Bodyshop, only genuine parts and materials are used throughout the restoration including painting the Turbo in Glasurit direct gloss paint.   Modifications include fitting late 944 teardrop mirrors however both teams agreed at the beginning of the project to restore the 944 Turbo in line with how it would have originally rolled off the Porsche Cars production line.

In September 2014 the finale and judging of the Restoration challenge will be held at the Festival of Porsche at Brand Hatch followed by all restoration entries completing a lap on the track.  Winners will be announced in October 2014, wish us luck!

If you would like to see the finished 944 we are happy to announce Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield and Shorade Accident Repair Centre will be joining the Porsche Club Great Britain stand at the Classic Motor Show 14 – 16 November, NEC where we are displaying alongside the members over the weekend.  We would love you to come and join us, and inspect the 944.
